Egypt has signed a significant $200 million deal with Qatar’s Al Mana Holding to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from used cooking oil. The project, located in the Suez Canal Economic Zone at Ain Sokhna, will begin with a first-phase investment aimed at producing 200,000 tonnes of aviation fuel annually. This agreement marks a major step in enhancing Egypt’s energy sector while fostering stronger ties between Egypt and Qatar.

The Suez Canal Economic Zone’s Role in Bilateral Relations

The deal represents Qatar’s first industrial investment in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, a critical hub for global trade. Egypt has been working to attract foreign investments, especially from wealthy Gulf nations, to address its growing foreign debt and budget deficit. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly hailed the project as a sign of growing momentum in relations between Cairo and Doha, highlighting mutual political will to foster increased trade and investments.

Strategic Importance of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Project

The sustainable aviation fuel produced from used cooking oil will play an important role in reducing carbon emissions, aligning with global sustainability efforts. This initiative will also enhance Egypt’s role in the growing renewable energy sector while contributing to global aviation’s shift toward more sustainable fuel sources. The deal underscores Qatar’s growing involvement in Egyptian industrial projects, adding to the broader context of Gulf investments in Egypt’s infrastructure and energy sectors.

A Growing Partnership

This new partnership comes after Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund made a landmark $29.7 billion investment in a luxury real estate and tourism development on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. The successful negotiation of these investments signals a new phase in Egyptian-Qatari relations, particularly following a period of tension between the two nations, which ended after diplomatic relations were restored in 2021.

The $200 million aviation fuel deal between Egypt and Qatar represents not only a key step toward sustainable energy but also a deepening of bilateral ties. As the project unfolds in the coming years, it will have significant economic and environmental benefits for Egypt, positioning it as a key player in the renewable energy sector while strengthening its relationship with the Gulf region.
