Doha will debut the “Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum” on November 28, 2025. It will be the first museum in the world dedicated to Maqbool Fida Husain, one of India’s most celebrated modern artists. The Qatar Foundation created the museum to showcase Husain’s artistic journey from the 1950s until his passing in 2011.
Husain, often called “India’s Picasso,” moved to Doha after facing threats in India over the controversial nature of his work. Qatar granted him honorary citizenship in 2010. The museum will display a comprehensive collection of his paintings, sketches, and installations from both his early and later periods. Visitors will gain insight into his stylistic evolution and influence.
The museum demonstrates Qatar’s growing investment in arts and cultural infrastructure. It adds to the country’s diverse offerings, including museums, exhibitions, and cultural festivals. Officials expect it to attract both domestic and international art lovers, strengthening Qatar’s position as a regional cultural hub. Curators are completing detailed archival work to ensure a high-quality visitor experience.
Beyond culture, the museum has diplomatic and soft-power significance. It promotes Qatar’s image as a supporter of artistic freedom, cross-cultural dialogue, and cultural preservation. The museum will also provide educational opportunities for young artists and scholars interested in modern South Asian and global art movements.
With its opening scheduled for late November, the M. F. Husain Museum will become a landmark in Doha’s cultural scene. It promises to draw visitors, enhance the arts sector, and highlight Qatar’s commitment to fostering creativity and learning.
